How to bring back the 2D dock in Mac OS X Leopard

Some of the prime complaints people have about Mac OS X Leopard are that the menu bar is, and shouldn’t be, translucent; and that the dock is a shelf rather than the nice 2D box featured in Tiger. Since the former was very recently solved in Mac OS X 10.5.2, today I will be solving the latter.

The first and, really, only step required is downloading the proper Automator workflow files. These files are available for download here, along with many other Leopard tweak applications that you can experiment with. The ones you’re looking for are “Enable 2D Dock” and “Disable 2D Dock,” depending on your desires.

Another way that’s a little more thought-intensive is to enter the following commands into the Terminal window exactly as they appear.

2D Dock

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES
killall Dock

3D Dock

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean NO
killall Dock
